I live in Tokyo, so this is a Tokyo resident’s perspective rather than an Osaka local’s verdict. What keeps me in Tokyo is that almost anything I need — work, restaurants, events, specialist shops, airports, entertainment — exists somewhere in the city.
Convenience
Tokyo’s scale is hard to beat. The downside is that the same scale creates long cross-city travel and a more exhausting pace.
Housing
Neither city can be summarized by one rent number. Your station and commute route matter more than the citywide average.
Work and Professional Life
Tokyo has an enormous concentration of headquarters, technology, media and international business. If career optionality matters, that is a real advantage.
Weekend Life
Tokyo also makes it easy to leave the city. I regularly go to Atami, Izu and Hakone; all can work as weekend escapes without needing a flight.
