How to Deal With Humidity in a Japanese Apartment: 9 Local Tips

My priority order is: run bathroom ventilation, use the air conditioner’s dry mode or a dehumidifier, move air around the room, and protect closets before you smell mold.

Quick Answer

My priority order is: run bathroom ventilation, use the air conditioner’s dry mode or a dehumidifier, move air around the room, and protect closets before you smell mold.

🇯🇵 Kimika’s Local Take

In Tokyo, I would actively look for a rental with an installed air conditioner and bathroom-drying function. If you do not ventilate bathrooms and toilets, mold can become a real problem. Indoor laundry is also much easier with proper drying; otherwise it can stay damp and smell.

1. Keep Bathroom Ventilation Running

The bathroom is one of the easiest places for moisture to linger. Learn the fan controls and do not treat ventilation as optional.

2. Use Air-Conditioner Dry Mode

Look for 除湿 or ドライ on the remote. This is often the first humidity tool already installed in your room.

3. Consider a Real Dehumidifier

If the apartment stays damp, a dedicated dehumidifier can be more effective than passive products. I personally consider dehumidification essential in a difficult room.

4. Protect Closets

Use moisture-absorbing boxes or sheets and avoid packing clothes so tightly that air cannot move.

5. Dry Laundry Fast

A dryer or bathroom-drying function is ideal. If you must dry indoors, use airflow and dehumidification; slow drying is where unpleasant odor becomes a problem.

6. Move Air

A circulator can help move conditioned air into corners and around hanging laundry.

7. Watch Furniture Against Walls

Leave some airflow behind large furniture if the room is prone to dampness.

8. Deal With Mold Early

Do not let a small patch become a seasonal project. Use an appropriate product and ventilate according to its instructions.

9. Choose the Apartment With Humidity in Mind

An air conditioner, bathroom dryer, ventilation and sunlight can be more valuable than decorative features.

⚠️ What Foreigners Often Misunderstand

Passive moisture boxes are useful for closets, but they are not enough to dehumidify an entire wet apartment.

Quick Checklist

  • Bathroom fan
  • AC dry mode
  • Dehumidifier if needed
  • Closet absorbers
  • Circulator
  • Fast laundry drying
  • Check hidden corners
